the HISTORY

In 2023, an archaeological excavation on Moskito Island uncovered an Amerindian fishing camp at Manchioneel Beach dating 1200-1400 AD, long before the arrival of Columbus in 1493. Several historic artifacts, such as pottery, shells, tools, and cooking equipment, were found, suggesting the island has been settled by humans for many centuries.

The group of people who lived here originally are the Taino. Their culture evolved in Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands over a thousand year period. The Taino people were displaced in 1514 when the Spanish attacked and settled on the island. Evidence of European settlement of Moskito remains to this day, including the foundation of a residence above Lime Tree Bay which dates back to the 1700s.

In 2007, the island was bought by Sir Richard Branson and divided into 10 exclusive lots for sale. Moskito Island is now home to eight families, and four of these incredible estates are available for groups to enjoy.
